Arma Reforger 1.8 & The Road to 1.9: How Specialist Roles, Concealment, and Mod Size Caps Are Changing Unit SOPs
How Specialist Roles, Concealment, and Mod Caps Are Changing Unit SOPs in Arma Reforger
Oct 15, 2026

Right now, Arma Reforger sits at the top of the MilSim Units directory with over 660 active units running operations every week. If your unit transitioned from Arma 3 recently (or is currently voting on making the switch), you already know that moving to Enfusion isn't just a copy-and-paste job for your old SOPs.
Between the changes in the Arma Reforger 1.8 Update and the 1.9 Experimental updates (1.9.0.5 through 1.9.0.10) covered in Dev Report #24, Bohemia Interactive has been quietly fixing some of the biggest headaches unit leaders and mission makers have complained about for years.
BUT FIRST: Looking for an active Reforger group or trying to recruit players who actually show up for squad drills? Browse over 660 active communities on MilSim Units or make sure your server runs smoothly during 100-player ops on the MilSim Units Server Providers Directory.
1. Specialist Roles Finally Matter in Vanilla Systems
For a long time, one of the hardest adjustments for units coming over from Arma 3 (especially groups used to KAT Medical and deep ACE settings) was differentiating between a regular rifleman, a Combat Lifesaver (CLS), and a dedicated Platoon or Squad Medic. In Update 1.8, specialist roles now get real built-in advantages when doing their jobs:
-
Combat Medics: Inspect and treat wounded soldiers faster and load casualties into vehicles much quicker during mass casualty (MASCAS) situations.
-
Engineers: Build field fortifications and deployables faster, and can now string razor wire directly to block off streets or funnel enemy infantry into kill zones (plus, you only need one sandbag in hand to start building while the rest pull straight from your inventory).
-
Logistics & Vehicle Crews: Load and unload supplies faster, and repair, rearm, and refuel armored vehicles and trucks in less time.
Even if your unit uses different mods on top of the base game, these changes make it much easier for unit leaderships to build clear role SOPs so every MOS in combat elements actually feels distinct.
2. "Far Hide" Concealment Changes Recon and Sniper Overwatch
Every milsim player knows the frustration of lying flat in tall grass thinking you're completely hidden, only to get sniped from 700 meters away because the grass stopped rendering for the enemy.
The new Far Hide system in Update 1.8 conceals distant characters against grass at long range, so lying prone in a field actually works the way it should. On top of that, tall grass and camouflage nets now block AI vision much better. For units that run PvE campaigns or have dedicated Recon / Scout Sniper detachments, bounding to cover, using underbarrel colored smoke grenades, and setting up camo-netted OP positions now makes a real tactical difference against AI patrols.
3. Balancing "Must-Haves" vs. "Nice-to-Haves" in Your Modpack
One thing we still see units struggle with is modpack bloat. Because so many mod creators build small, single-asset mods (and console players on Xbox deal with storage caps), trying to pack 15 different uniform variations and 20 niche rifles into a server will quickly eat up your mod slots and hurt server stability.
The units having the smoothest transitions right now are the ones that sit down with their command staff and separate what the unit needs to run its core platoons (weapons, primary vehicles, radios, and core medical) from aesthetic "nice-to-haves." Keep your modpack lean, test every update before weekend ops, and your attendance and server performance will thank you.
How Is Your Unit Handling 1.8 and 1.9?
Have the new specialist speeds and Far Hide system changed how your units run drills and operations, or are you still waiting on more advanced mods before switching from Arma 3?
