Hell Let Loose Update 22: Lake Balaton, a Mystery Vehicle and Rifle Grenades That Lob
Hell Let Loose is heading back to the Eastern Front, and this time the ground is frozen. Update 22 is due in November with a new map, Lake Balaton, a vehicle class the studio still won't name, and a second life for the rifle grenades that arrived with Update 21. "The development team's focus is currently fully on Update 22 which will be dropping just next month in November," the team wrote in Dev Brief #222. There's no exact day yet.
It's not the winter map most of the community was waiting for. Seelow Heights won the community vote earlier this year, but back in Dev Brief #220 the studio pushed it into 2027 to give "this brutal battlefield the attention it deserves." Lake Balaton took its slot.
Lake Balaton
The map puts you in Hungary during Operation Spring Awakening, the last major German offensive of the war, launched in March 1945. The studio's pitch is short: "a distinct new Hell Let Loose battlefield, built around the scale, atmosphere and combined-arms combat that define the experience," set across a frozen landscape.

The one look we've had is that work-in-progress shot: reeds, bare trees and a lot of open ice. If the final map keeps that much flat, exposed ground, armor and recon are going to matter, and nobody's going to enjoy a long walk to the next point. The devs have said Experimental Branch playtests will come before release. Update 21 had two of those before it shipped, so watch for a Lake Balaton playtest post. It's the best early hint of the release date.
Something with tracks
The new vehicle is still a tease. Dev Brief #220 said "a new class of vehicle will also be rolling onto the battlefield with Update 22," promised "some serious firepower," and then signed off with "We've probably said enough for now… any guesses?" The only image is a close-up of heavy tank tracks in a ruined town.

When the studio talked about armor balance in Dev Brief #221, it said tank changes are being weighed against the new vehicles coming in Update 22. Tankers should expect the balance to move again.
Rifle grenades you can plant
This is the change squads will actually feel. Update 21 let you fire rifle grenades from the hip or shoulder. Update 22 adds a planted mode for indirect fire. Dev Brief #221 says it's meant for when you know roughly where the enemy is but can't see them, like a squad spotted behind a building, or when you want to drop smoke or HE on a capture point from somewhere safer.
The studio is careful to say these won't replace mortars or other dedicated indirect fire. You get a few grenades, smaller explosions, slow reload and setup times, and ammo that depends on your role and loadout. In practice that sounds like a squad-level tool: a quick smoke screen over a point before a push, or a couple of HE rounds into a garden you know is full of Germans.
Fixes on the list
The two feedback briefs also tie a handful of fixes to Update 22:
- Tank HE damage. Update 21's radius change caused "a miscalculation on release, resulting in less damage being applied." That gets fixed, with more detail on kill radius and explosion size.
- More MG34 audio tweaks, plus a fix for a possible console audio issue.
- Controller conflicts, such as rifle grenade and fire selector inputs overlapping bipod mounting, are targeted "where possible, subject to development and testing."
- Memory and performance work on Juno Beach and Smolensk, some of it global.
Two big complaints aren't on that list. The severe FPS drops reported since Update 21 can now be reproduced by QA, but the studio says it hasn't found the root cause. The Level 1 loadout bug is planned for work going into 2027. Not everyone is patient about it. One reply under the official announcement back in September just said "Don't forget to break something !!!" A steadier update would buy the devs a lot of goodwill.
Meanwhile in Vietnam: Patch 1.7 is live today
If your unit plays Hell Let Loose: Vietnam too, Patch 1.7 went out today, October 21. It's the last patch before 2.0, according to MP1st, and on console it shows up as update 1.015.
The US gets the M1A1 Thompson, its own SMG answer to the NVA's K50M. The M16A1 can now take a 30-round magazine, which costs 2 weight per mag compared with 1 for the 20-rounder. Transport boats now switch off their engines when the driver gets out, so they work as spawn points right away. If the driver is killed in the seat, though, the engine keeps running, so shooting the boat driver still stops the spawn.
A few changes help anyone running a server or leading a squad. Commanders no longer get team-kill penalties when friendlies wander into their napalm, artillery or bombing runs. The 10-second redeploy penalty is gone. The AFK kick on official servers drops from 30 minutes to 10. Squad names now use the NATO phonetic alphabet, so callouts run Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, which fits the period.
