Starting tomorrow, August 7, and running through August 9, 2026, Bulkhead’s highly anticipated tactical all-out warfare FPS enters its largest Closed Alpha window to date. Tens of thousands of players have been invited, making this the most significant public test of the game so far.

Whether you’re already locked in or still watching from the sidelines, here’s everything you need to know about WARDOGS and the upcoming playtest. image

What is WARDOGS?

WARDOGS is a large-scale tactical FPS that blends grounded gunplay, vehicular combat, player-driven building and destruction, and a persistent cash economy into a 100-player sandbox.

Developed by Bulkhead (the studio behind Battalion Legacy and other titles) and published by Team17, the game aims to deliver high-stakes, team-focused warfare without relying on battle royale or extraction mechanics.

The developers describe their approach simply:

“A Tactical All Out Warfare Shooter that hasn’t forgotten it’s a game.”

It sits in that sweet spot between slower, deliberate tactical decision-making and responsive, satisfying gunplay.

Core Gameplay: Control the Zone

Every match features up to 100 players split across three teams:

  • Valkyra
  • Lonestar
  • Manticore

The primary objective is inspired by King of the Hill. Teams compete to secure and hold a Control Zone — a 2x2 km area on the map. Every 30 seconds, the team with the most players inside the zone earns a point. The first team to reach 100 points wins.

A dynamic Hot Zone inside the Control Zone adds another layer of intensity. Players inside the Hot Zone count as two for scoring purposes and earn double cash from activities, creating constant pressure and high-value engagements.

Matches are designed to support seamless drop-in/drop-out play. Whether you have two hours or just ten minutes, every player who enters the zone contributes to their team.

Key Systems That Set WARDOGS Apart

Cash Economy & Loadouts
There are no fixed classes. Players start with cash and purchase whatever gear, vehicles, medical supplies, or building materials they want. Want to play medic and builder in the same life? Grab a bigger backpack and do both. Roles that support the team tend to be the most profitable, encouraging cooperation over pure solo play.

Vehicles & Aircraft
Drivable vehicles and flyable aircraft are fully integrated. Combined-arms combat is a core part of the experience, giving players multiple ways to approach the battlefield.

Building & Destruction
The environment is destructible, and players can fortify positions or reshape the battlefield through construction. This creates organic, player-driven strategies that change from match to match.

Tactical Depth
The game includes realistic projectile ballistics, different ammo types, a weight system, and inventory management. Loadout choices and moment-to-moment decisions carry real risk and reward rather than pure “point and shoot” gameplay.

Closed Alpha Playtest Details (August 7–9)

This is the largest playtest WARDOGS has run so far. Previous tests were smaller and more restricted; this Closed Alpha is opening the doors to tens of thousands of invited players.

Key points for playtesters:

  • Playtests are drop-in/drop-out friendly.
  • Progress (cash) from early Pre-Alpha tests does not carry over, as the game is still in active development.
  • Controller support is currently limited.
  • The game is PC-only for now.

If you’ve already received an invite, check the official Discord announcement channels for exact login windows and any last-minute instructions. image

How to Join Future Playtests

Even if you didn’t get into this weekend’s test, you can still sign up for future ones:

  1. Head to the official signup page via FirstLook: community.wardogs.com
  2. Link your Steam and Discord accounts
  3. Wishlist the game on Steam to improve your chances
  4. Join the official WARDOGS Discord and keep an eye on announcement channels

Slots are limited, and selection can depend on region and hardware, so signing up early remains the best approach.

If you're lucky enough, many of the developers, like the CEO, Joe Brammer, Game Director Howard Philpott, and even some content creators like Jake Lucky, are giving out keys via social media to get as many people into the playtest as possible!

At that point, maybe just opening it to everyone, much like Hell Let Loose, Vietnam did a few weekends ago?

Why This Matters for the Tactical & Milsim Community

WARDOGS is generating significant interest among players who enjoy large-scale teamwork, combined arms, and systems that reward communication and planning. While it’s not a pure milsim, its focus on squad play, risk/reward decision-making, and large player counts puts it firmly in the conversation alongside titles like Squad, Hell Let Loose, and Arma.

With Early Access planned for later in 2026, this Closed Alpha is a major checkpoint for the team as they gather feedback on performance, balance, economy, and match flow.

The Closed Alpha starts tomorrow, August 7th

Are you in the playtest? What role are you planning to run first — infantry, vehicle crew, builder, or something else?

Drop a comment and let us know. See you on the battlefield! Manticore!

Don't forget its never to late to squad up with a team prior to the playtest! Hit up WARDOGS on Milsim Units to find your next squad to roll with!

Stay tactical.
